T4 slip FAQ

What do the T4 boxes mean overall?

Each numbered box on your T4 reports a specific piece of pay, deduction, or benefit — employment income, CPP/QPP and EI amounts, tax withheld, pension adjustments, and coded taxable benefits. Some items don't get their own printed box and instead appear as a code (30-87) in the "Other Information" area near the bottom of the slip. See the quick-reference table above for what each box reports and where it goes on your T1.

Why doesn't Box 14 match my annual salary?

Box 14 is gross employment income, not your base salary — it adds bonuses, commissions, vacation pay, and taxable benefits (Box 40 items like a company car or group life premiums) on top of salary. It can also be lower than expected if part of your pay was a retiring allowance, which is reported separately in Box 66 or 67 instead of Box 14.

What is Box 40 and do I need to enter it separately?

Box 40 totals the taxable benefits your employer provided during the year — things like a company car, employer-paid premiums, or gift cards over the CRA threshold. It is informational: those amounts are already included inside Box 14, so you don't add Box 40 again anywhere on your return.

What should I check before filing?

Match your T4 boxes against your final (year-end) pay stub's YTD totals. If you had multiple employers, each issues its own T4 — enter each one separately rather than combining them, since the CRA cross-checks slip totals. Box 22 (income tax deducted) from every T4 you received sums into your total tax withheld for the year.
