How room works: Each January 1st, your TFSA room increases by (a) the annual contribution limit and (b) any amount you withdrew in the previous year. Unused room carries forward indefinitely. Over-contributions are taxed 1% per month on the excess until withdrawn. This calculator estimates based on the inputs you provide — the CRA's My Account is the authoritative source for your personal room.

Cumulative room by birth year (through 2026)

You start building TFSA room the year you turn 18 (earliest 2009). If you were 18+ in 2009, you have the full $109,000; younger Canadians have less. Assumes Canadian residency since the eligible year and no contributions yet.

Birth year First eligible year Cumulative room through 2026
1991 or earlier 2009 $109,000
1996 2014 $83,500
2000 2018 $57,000
2004 2022 $33,500
2008 2026 $7,000

Born after 2008? You're not yet 18 — TFSA room begins the year you turn 18.

Over-contribution rules

Penalty: 1% per month on the highest excess amount in the month. Charged until the excess is withdrawn or absorbed by new room on January 1.

Common mistake: re-contributing a withdrawal in the same calendar year. The withdrawal doesn't add back to room until the NEXT January 1 — if you have no other room, re-contributing triggers an over-contribution penalty immediately.

Reporting: Form RC243 (TFSA Return) is due June 30 of the following year. Interest and late-filing penalties apply if not filed.

Non-residents: Contributing while a non-resident of Canada adds an additional 1%/month penalty until the contribution is withdrawn or you become a resident again.

Frequently asked questions

What is my TFSA contribution room in 2026?

If you turned 18 in 2009 or earlier and have been a Canadian resident since, your cumulative TFSA room from 2009 through 2026 is $109,000. The 2026 annual limit is $7,000. Subtract your lifetime contributions and add back withdrawals made in prior calendar years to calculate your personal available room.

When do TFSA withdrawals add back to my room?

Withdrawals are added back to your TFSA contribution room on January 1 of the year AFTER you withdrew. Withdrawals made in 2026 do not restore room until January 1, 2027. Re-contributing in the same year you withdrew causes an over-contribution if you have no other room available.

When did I start accumulating TFSA room?

You accumulate room for each year you were both a Canadian resident and at least 18 years old, starting in 2009. If you turned 18 after 2009, your room starts the year you turned 18 — see the "room by birth year" table above. Unused room never expires; it carries forward indefinitely.

What is the penalty for over-contributing to a TFSA?

The CRA charges 1% per month on the highest excess amount each month. The penalty continues until you withdraw the excess or new contribution room opens up on January 1. You must file Form RC243 to report excess TFSA amounts.

How is TFSA room calculated for new Canadian residents?

You only accumulate TFSA room for years you were a Canadian resident and at least 18 years old. Time spent as a non-resident (even before becoming a resident) does not count. Use the 'Canadian resident since' field to exclude non-resident years from your cumulative limit.

What is the TFSA annual limit each year?

TFSA annual limits: 2009-2012 $5,000; 2013-2014 $5,500; 2015 $10,000; 2016-2018 $5,500; 2019-2022 $6,000; 2023 $6,500; 2024-2026 $7,000. The 2026 limit remained $7,000 after indexation rounded to the nearest $500.
