Canadian Tax Year: Key Deadlines and Important Dates 2025
All the key Canadian tax deadlines for 2025: T1 filing, RRSP contributions, GST/HST remittances, instalments, and employer reporting dates.
Canada’s tax year runs January 1 to December 31. Here are the most important tax deadlines for 2025.
Personal Tax Return (T1) Deadlines
| Deadline | Who It Applies To |
|---|---|
| April 30, 2025 | Most Canadians — file your 2024 T1 return |
| June 16, 2025 | Self-employed individuals and their spouses/partners |
Important: Even if you file late (with a June deadline), any balance owing must be paid by April 30 to avoid interest. The June deadline only extends the filing, not the payment.
RRSP Contribution Deadline
March 3, 2025 — Last day to contribute to your RRSP for the 2024 tax year.
RRSP contributions made in the first 60 days of the year can be applied to either the prior year or the current year’s taxes. This gives Canadians extra time after year-end to top up their RRSP.
TFSA Contribution Room
New TFSA room of $7,000 was added on January 1, 2025. There’s no deadline — unused room carries forward indefinitely.
Tax Instalments
If the CRA requires you to pay tax by instalments, the 2025 due dates are:
- March 15, 2025
- June 15, 2025
- September 15, 2025
- December 15, 2025
Instalments are required if your “net tax owing” (federal tax + provincial tax minus withholdings) exceeds $3,000 in both 2025 and either 2024 or 2023.
Employer Deadlines
| Deadline | Requirement |
|---|---|
| February 28, 2025 | Issue T4 slips to employees for 2024 |
| February 28, 2025 | File T4 Summary with the CRA |
| March 31, 2025 | File T3, T5, T5013 information returns |
GST/HST Filing Deadlines
| Filing Frequency | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Annual filers | 3 months after fiscal year-end |
| Quarterly filers | 1 month after quarter-end |
| Monthly filers | 1 month after month-end |
Businesses with December 31 fiscal year-end filing annually must file their 2024 GST/HST return and remit any balance by April 30, 2025.
Quebec Residents
Quebec residents face the same deadlines for federal (T1) returns. For their provincial return (TP-1):
- April 30, 2025 — general deadline
- June 15, 2025 — for self-employed
Foreign Property Reporting
If you own foreign property with a cost over $100,000 CAD at any time in the year, you must file Form T1135 by the same deadline as your T1.
