CRA (Canada Revenue Agency)

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is the federal body responsible for administering Canada's tax laws, collecting income taxes and GST/HST, and delivering benefit programs such as the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and the GST/HST credit. It is equivalent to the IRS in the United States or HMRC in the United Kingdom.

The CRA manages your tax account through My Account, an online portal where you can file returns, check your Notice of Assessment, view RRSP and TFSA contribution room, update personal details, and track benefit payments. Most individual tax interactions — from filing your T1 return to receiving your NOA — go through the CRA.

The CRA also administers programs on behalf of most provinces and territories. Only Quebec operates a separate provincial tax authority (Revenu Québec), meaning Quebec residents file two tax returns while all other Canadians file a single return with the CRA.

How it works

Most of your day-to-day interaction with the CRA happens through My Account, the online portal that lets you file your T1 return, view your Notice of Assessment, check your RRSP and TFSA contribution room, and track incoming benefit payments like the Canada Child Benefit. Setting up My Account well before you need it for a mortgage application or an RRSP contribution decision saves you from a paper-based scramble later.

Because the CRA administers programs on behalf of nearly every province and territory, most Canadians deal with a single tax authority for both their federal and provincial obligations. Quebec is the exception: Revenu Quebec runs its own parallel system, so Quebec residents interact with two separate agencies rather than one for essentially every tax matter.

A common point of confusion is assuming the CRA automatically knows about life changes, such as a new address, a new dependant, or a marriage or separation. In fact you need to update these details yourself through My Account or by phone, and failing to do so can delay benefit payments or send a Notice of Assessment to the wrong address.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create a CRA My Account?

It isn't mandatory, but it's the fastest way to check your RRSP and TFSA room, view your Notice of Assessment, and track benefit payments, so most Canadians set one up well before tax season.

Why do Quebec residents deal with two tax agencies?

Quebec is the only province that runs its own tax authority, Revenu Quebec, separately from the CRA, which is why Quebec residents file both a federal and a provincial return each year.

Does the CRA only handle income tax?

No, the CRA also collects GST/HST, administers the Home Buyers' Plan and RRSP rules, and delivers benefit programs such as the Canada Child Benefit and the GST/HST credit.
