What this estimate includes
The calculator separates two rules: possible principal inclusion under subsection 15(2), and the low-interest benefit under subsection 80.4.
The repayment checkbox is only a screen. Employee-loan exceptions, ordinary-course lending, back-to-back arrangements and a series of repayments require fact-specific review.
Questions this calculator answers
When is a shareholder loan included in income?
Subsection 15(2) generally includes a loan received because of shareholding in the borrower’s income unless a statutory exception applies.
What is the one-year shareholder loan repayment rule?
A loan can be excluded when it is repaid within one year after the end of the corporation tax year in which it arose and the repayment is not part of a series of loans or repayments.
Can an interest benefit apply even if the principal is excluded?
Yes. CRA can calculate a subsection 80.4 interest benefit using quarterly prescribed rates, less qualifying interest paid by the borrower.
What is the CRA shareholder-loan rate for 2026 Q4?
CRA set the employee and shareholder low-interest loan prescribed rate at 3% for October 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026.
