Frequently asked questions
How does the reverse salary calculator work?
It uses binary search on the site's take-home pay engine: it repeatedly tries a gross salary, computes what that salary's actual take-home pay would be after tax, CPP, and EI, and narrows the range up or down until the result lands within a cent of your target take-home. That converged gross salary is the answer shown.
What deductions are included in the calculation?
The calculation runs through federal income tax, provincial or territorial income tax, CPP (or QPP in Quebec), and EI — the same deductions modelled by the take-home pay engine. You can optionally add an annual RRSP contribution or a monthly student loan payment, both of which change the gross salary needed to reach the same net target.
Why does the same take-home pay need different gross salaries in different provinces?
Provincial and territorial income tax brackets, rates, and credits differ, and Quebec's payroll deductions also differ (QPP instead of CPP, a lower EI rate offset by QPIP). Because CPP/EI and federal tax are otherwise similar nationwide, provincial tax is the main driver of the gap — the same net income can require a noticeably higher or lower gross salary depending on where you live.
Can I account for RRSP contributions or student loan payments?
Yes — enter an annual RRSP contribution to see how the tax deduction it generates changes the required gross salary, or a monthly student loan payment to see how that fixed outflow is reflected in the target. Both feed directly into the same take-home pay engine used for the binary search.
How accurate are the results?
The binary search converges to within $0.01 of your target take-home pay, so the gross salary figure itself is precise given the inputs. Accuracy against your actual paycheque still depends on how closely your real deductions match the standard federal, provincial, CPP, and EI rules the calculator assumes — employer-specific benefits or additional withholdings aren't modelled.
