CCB Summary
How it works: The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment for eligible families with children under 18. The benefit is based on your adjusted family net income from the previous tax year. Families with income below $38,237 receive the full benefit. Above that threshold, the benefit is gradually reduced — first at a lower clawback rate up to $82,847, then at a higher rate beyond that. The maximum annual benefit is $8,157 per child under 6 and $6,883 per child aged 6–17 for the July 2026 – June 2027 benefit period. If a child is approved for the Disability Tax Credit, the family also receives the Child Disability Benefit — up to $3,480 per DTC-eligible child, paid in full up to $82,847 of family income and reduced above that.
About the Canada Child Benefit
The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment administered by the CRA to help eligible families with the cost of raising children under age 18. The benefit is income-tested, meaning higher family income results in a lower payment.
Two-phase reduction: CCB is reduced in two phases as adjusted family net income rises above $38,237. The reduction rate in each phase depends on how many children you have — families with more children have higher reduction rates but also receive a larger total benefit. Above a certain income threshold the benefit reaches zero.
Filing requirement: Both you and your spouse or common-law partner must file a tax return every year, even if you have no income. The CRA uses your prior-year net income to calculate payments for the July–June benefit year. Missing a filing can interrupt or stop your CCB payments.
What is the Canada Child Benefit?
The Canada Child Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment made by the Canada Revenue Agency to families raising children under 18. It is the federal government's main child benefit, and it is paid on the 20th of each month for a benefit year that runs July 2026 – June 2027.
It used to be called the child tax benefit. The CCB replaced the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB), the National Child Benefit Supplement and the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) in July 2016 and rolled all three into one payment. If you are searching for the "child tax benefit" or "baby bonus" in Canada, the CCB is the current programme — the older names no longer exist.
Two things make it different from a tax credit. It is paid in cash monthly rather than settled once a year on your return, and it is completely tax-free: you never report it as income, and it does not reduce other income-tested benefits. What it does depend on is your adjusted family net income (AFNI) from the 2025 tax return — which is why both partners must file every year, even with no income at all.
Canada Child Benefit amounts, 2026-27 benefit year

Who is eligible for the CCB
You must meet all of the following:
- You live with a child who is under 18 years old.
- You are primarily responsible for the child's care and upbringing — supervising daily activities and needs, arranging medical care and child care.
- You are a resident of Canada for tax purposes.
- You or your spouse or common-law partner are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a protected person, a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months and holds a valid permit in the 19th month, or an individual registered (or entitled to be registered) under the Indian Act.
- You are not applying for a foster child for whom Children's Special Allowances are payable.
On top of eligibility, both you and your partner must file a tax return every year, even with no income. Your 2026-27 payments are calculated from the 2025 returns; a late or missing return stops the payments until it is assessed.
How to apply for the Canada Child Benefit
You apply once, not every year. Pick whichever route fits — all three go to the CRA, and the application also assesses you for the related provincial and territorial child benefits, so there is nothing else to file.
At birth
Consent to the Automated Benefits Application when you register the birth with your province or territory. Nothing further is needed.
Online (fastest)
Sign in to your CRA account and choose "Apply for child benefits".
By mail
Send Form RC66 to your tax centre, plus Form RC66SCH if you or your partner became a resident of Canada within the last two years.
Full instructions, required documents and the tax-centre addresses are on the CRA's apply for the Canada child benefit page.
When is the CCB paid?
Monthly, normally on the 20th (or the last business day before it when the 20th falls on a weekend or holiday). Payments for July 2026 – June 2027 are recalculated each July from your 2025 return. If your total entitlement for the year is less than $240, the CRA pays it as a single lump sum with the July payment instead of monthly.
See every federal and provincial payment date on our benefit payment dates hub, or the CRA's own benefit payment dates calendar.
Worked example: $85,000 family income, two children
A family with one child under 6 and one aged 6–17 and $85,000 AFNI (above both reduction thresholds):
Frequently asked questions
What is the CCB in Canada?
The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment from the Canada Revenue Agency to families raising children under 18. It replaced the Canada Child Tax Benefit and the Universal Child Care Benefit in July 2016, which is why people still search for it as the "child tax benefit". It is income-tested against your adjusted family net income (AFNI), it is not reported as income on your return, and it is recalculated every July for a benefit year that runs July 2026 – June 2027.
How much CCB will I get per child?
For the 2026-27 benefit year (July 2026 – June 2027), the maximum CCB is $8,157 per year for each child under age 6, and $6,883 per year for each child aged 6 to 17. The actual amount you receive depends on your adjusted family net income — higher income reduces the benefit according to a two-phase reduction formula.
Who is eligible for the Canada Child Benefit?
You must live with a child under 18 and be primarily responsible for their care and upbringing, and you must be a resident of Canada for tax purposes. You (and your spouse or common-law partner, if you have one) must also be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months with a valid permit in the 19th month, or an individual registered under the Indian Act. Both of you must file a tax return every year, even with no income — the CRA uses your 2025 return to set your 2026-27 payments.
At what income does CCB start to decrease?
For the 2026-27 benefit year, the full CCB is paid when adjusted family net income is $38,237 or less. Above this threshold, the benefit is reduced at a rate that depends on the number of children — families with one child see a 7% reduction rate in the first phase, while families with more children face higher reduction rates. A second, lower phase-out rate applies above $82,847.
How do I apply for the CCB?
Three routes. At birth, tick the Automated Benefits Application box on the provincial birth registration and the CCB is set up for you. Otherwise sign in to your CRA account and use "Apply for child benefits", which is the fastest option. If you cannot use either, mail Form RC66, Canada Child Benefits Application, to your tax centre — with Form RC66SCH as well if you or your partner became a resident of Canada in the last two years. You apply once; after that, filing your return each year keeps the payments coming.
Is CCB taxable?
No. The Canada Child Benefit is completely tax-free. You do not report CCB payments as income on your tax return, and receiving CCB does not affect other income-tested benefits or credits.
When are CCB payments made?
CCB payments are made monthly, typically around the 20th of each month. The benefit year runs from July to June — for example, payments for July 2026 – June 2027 are based on your 2025 tax return. You must file your taxes every year to continue receiving CCB. If your total annual entitlement is under $240, the CRA pays it as a single lump sum in July instead of monthly.
What is the Child Disability Benefit?
The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) is an extra tax-free amount — up to $3,480 per child ($290.00 a month) for the 2026-27 benefit year — added to the CCB for a child who qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit. It phases out at higher family incomes above $82,847 (3.2% for one eligible child, 5.7% for two or more).
How does CCB work in shared custody?
When a child lives roughly equally with two parents, each parent is treated as having shared custody and receives 50% of the CCB they would get as the sole caregiver, based on their own adjusted family net income.
Do I need to apply for CCB every year?
No. You apply once — at birth through the Automated Benefits Application, or any time through your CRA account. After that, file your tax return each year and the CRA recalculates your payments for the new July–June benefit year.
Is CCB indexed to inflation?
Yes. The maximum amounts and income thresholds are indexed each July. For 2026-27 the maximums rose to $8,157 (under 6) and $6,883 (aged 6-17) from $7,997 and $6,748 the prior year.
